Kevin Bonderud

altKevin Bonderud has worked for nearly three decades as a communications and public affairs specialist. He is an independent consultant to nonprofits, associations, think tanks, corporations and public relations firms. His services include providing strategic counsel and editorial services, orchestrating media relations, public education and advocacy campaigns, and developing coalitions and third-party advocates on a range of issues, including health care, education, the economy, transportation, energy and the environment.

From 1990-2005, Bonderud was the senior communications and legislative strategist, media consultant and writer for Widmeyer Communications, a Washington, D.C.-based public relations firm. In the 1980s, he worked for then-Congressman Martin Sabo and on political campaigns.

At Widmeyer – where Bonderud was executive vice president and a partner in the firm – he developed and executed communications strategies, national media operations and major legislative and public education campaigns for clients involved in a wide variety of issues, including education, health care, government reform, labor, business regulation, economic and workforce development, transportation, financial services and the environment.

As a media relations specialist, Bonderud has designed and implemented dozens of campaigns resulting in widespread national coverage. His media expertise has ensured that clients’ messages are prominently heard, organizations are positioned as recognized and respected sources, public perceptions are changed and policy debates are influenced.

For clients with legislative or regulatory challenges, Bonderud has managed grassroots and direct-persuasion campaigns where he has built national coalitions, provided political and legislative counsel and executed complementary media and advertising efforts. He also has lobbied for clients on Capitol Hill and in several state legislatures.

Bonderud has written scores of op-ed pieces, articles, ads, congressional testimony, speeches, reports, video and radio scripts and brochures. His writing for clients – under the names of governors, senators and congressmen, corporate executives and labor leaders, and the heads of major trade associations, foundations and think tanks -- has been published in dozens of major newspapers, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and The Boston Globe, as well as numerous other publications, including Roll Call, The Hill, Financial Times, Education Week and The Journal of Commerce.

Throughout the 1980s, Bonderud served as press secretary and chief writer for Rep. Sabo (D-Minn.), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and former chairman of the Budget Committee. Besides managing the congressman’s communications operations, he served as a top political strategist and worked extensively on a wide range of legislative issues. His political campaign experience includes service on Walter F. Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign and as campaign manager for Sabo’s 1980 congressional campaign in Minneapolis.

Since 2005, Bonderud has been a member of the board of directors of Pact, an international development organization (an NGO) with an annual budget of $200 million working in 23 countries worldwide. A Minnesota native, he is a graduate of Minneapolis’ Augsburg College.
